Trajenta® (Linagliptin) Tablets for Type 2 Diabetes
Trajenta® (linagliptin) is a once-daily oral prescription medicine used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the class of medicines known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors and is typically prescribed when lifestyle measures alone do not provide adequate glycaemic control.
What Is Trajenta®?
Trajenta® contains linagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor that enhances the body’s natural incretin hormones. These hormones play an important role in regulating blood sugar levels following meals.
In line with guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), DPP-4 inhibitors may be considered when metformin alone is insufficient or unsuitable. Trajenta® may be prescribed on its own or in combination with other glucose-lowering medicines such as metformin.
How Trajenta® Works
Linagliptin works by blocking the DPP-4 enzyme responsible for breaking down incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). By prolonging their activity, Trajenta®:
- Stimulates insulin release in response to elevated blood glucose levels
- Reduces glucagon secretion
- Decreases glucose production in the liver
These effects contribute to improved postprandial and overall glycaemic control without typically causing significant weight gain.
