Humalog® KwikPen® (Insulin Lispro)

Price range: 109,00 € through 159,00 €

Humalog® KwikPen® (insulin lispro) is a rapid-acting mealtime insulin used to control blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes. It begins working within 15 minutes and helps manage post-meal glucose spikes.

Humalog® KwikPen® (Insulin Lispro) – Fast-Acting Mealtime Insulin

Humalog® KwikPen® is a pre-filled, rapid-acting insulin pen containing insulin lispro. It is used to improve blood glucose control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. Designed for convenient, accurate dosing, Humalog works quickly to help control blood sugar spikes that occur around mealtimes.

What Is Humalog® KwikPen®?

Humalog® KwikPen® is a disposable insulin delivery device pre-filled with insulin lispro, a rapid-acting insulin analogue. It is used in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes to manage postprandial (after-meal) blood glucose levels.

Rapid-acting insulins like insulin lispro are typically used in combination with long-acting (basal) insulin therapy. Clinical guidance such as NICE Guideline NG17 (Type 1 Diabetes) and NICE Guideline NG28 (Type 2 Diabetes) supports the use of mealtime insulin when blood glucose targets are not achieved with basal insulin or oral medications alone.

How Humalog® Works

Insulin lispro is structurally modified from human insulin to allow faster absorption after subcutaneous injection. It begins working within approximately 15 minutes, peaks in about 1 hour, and continues to lower blood glucose for 2–5 hours.

Humalog works by:

  • Facilitating glucose uptake into muscle and fat cells
  • Suppressing glucose production by the liver
  • Reducing post-meal blood glucose spikes

Because of its rapid onset, Humalog is typically administered within 15 minutes before a meal or immediately after eating.

Available Strengths and Appearance

Humalog® KwikPen® is supplied in 3 mL pre-filled disposable pens and is available in two strengths:

  • Humalog 100 units/mL: Beige pen with a purple injection button.
  • Humalog 200 units/mL: Dark blue pen with a purple injection button (higher concentration; delivers the same number of insulin units in a smaller volume).

The 200 units/mL version is not interchangeable on a unit-to-unit volume basis with other insulin pens. Always verify your prescribed strength before use.

Who Can Use Humalog®?

Humalog is indicated for:

  • Adults with type 1 diabetes (as part of a basal-bolus regimen)
  • Adults with type 2 diabetes requiring mealtime insulin
  • Children with diabetes, as prescribed by a healthcare professional

It is not recommended for treating episodes of hypoglycaemia and should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to insulin lispro or any of its components.

How to Use Humalog® KwikPen®

General Dosing Guidance

Your dosage will depend on:

  • Your blood glucose levels
  • Your carbohydrate intake
  • Your physical activity level
  • Other diabetes medications you are taking

Humalog KwikPen delivers doses in 1-unit increments. Always follow your healthcare provider’s dosing instructions carefully.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Check the insulin. It should be clear and colourless.
  3. Attach a new sterile needle before each injection.
  4. Prime the pen according to manufacturer instructions to remove air bubbles.
  5. Turn the dose knob to select your prescribed dose.
  6. Insert the needle into the abdomen, thigh, buttock, or upper arm.
  7. Press the injection button fully and hold for 5–10 seconds.
  8. Remove the needle and dispose of it safely in a sharps container.

Do not share your KwikPen with anyone, even if the needle has been changed. Sharing may transmit infections.

Injection Site Rotation

Rotate injection sites within the same region to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy (abnormal fat tissue changes). Avoid injecting into areas that are tender, bruised, scarred, or hardened.

Storage Instructions

  • Store unopened pens in a refrigerator (2°C–8°C).
  • Do not freeze. Discard if frozen.
  • Once in use, store at room temperature (below 30°C).
  • Protect from excessive heat and light.
  • Discard after 28 days of first use, even if insulin remains.

Possible Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
  • Injection site reactions
  • Weight gain
  • Mild swelling (fluid retention)

Serious Side Effects

  • Severe hypoglycaemia (may cause seizures or unconsciousness)
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)
  • Low potassium levels (hypokalaemia)
  • Heart failure risk when combined with certain medications (e.g., thiazolidinediones)

Seek immediate medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

Understanding Hypoglycaemia

Hypoglycaemia is the most common adverse effect of insulin therapy. It can occur if too much insulin is administered, meals are delayed, carbohydrate intake is insufficient, or physical activity increases unexpectedly.

Symptoms of Low Blood Sugar

  • Sweating
  • Shakiness
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

Treatment

  1. Consume 15–20 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates (e.g., glucose tablets, fruit juice).
  2. Recheck blood sugar after 15 minutes.
  3. Repeat treatment if necessary.
  4. Eat a balanced snack if your next meal is more than one hour away.

Drug Interactions

Certain medications may alter insulin requirements or mask symptoms of hypoglycaemia. These include:

  • Oral antidiabetic medications
  • Beta-blockers (may mask low blood sugar symptoms)
  • Corticosteroids
  • Diuretics
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Alcohol

Always inform your healthcare provider about all prescription and non-prescription medications you are taking.

Special Considerations

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Maintaining tight blood glucose control during pregnancy is essential to reduce risks to both mother and baby. Consult your healthcare provider to determine appropriate insulin dosing during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Kidney or Liver Impairment

Insulin requirements may change in patients with kidney or liver disease. Close monitoring is recommended.

Not Suitable for Everyone

Do not use Humalog if you are experiencing hypoglycaemia or if you are allergic to insulin lispro or any of its ingredients.

Buying Humalog® KwikPen® Online
